A Guide to Choosing Outdoor Light Bulbs

    Last updated 7 years ago

An outdoor lighting system for your home can satisfy a range of needs. Whether you’re highlighting your home’s architectural detail, showing off your garden with landscape lighting, or enhancing the beauty and security of your property, you have many bulbs to choose from.

This guide will take you through how to determine your lighting goals and the best bulbs for the job.

    Purpose

If a primary goal is home security, bright energy-efficient LED bulbs are a great fit, thanks to no warm-up time and a long life. For accent lighting, smaller light fixtures can be used to highlight a walkway or secluded seating area and to create a more intimate mood.

    Location

The desired coverage of your landscape lighting will often determine the kind of bulb and light fixture you will need. A spotlight is used to illuminate specific landscape or architectural features and is often placed at ground level.

Motion-sensitive security floods are generally mounted up high and directed down towards key areas. Softer accent lighting is popular along pathways, and hidden ambient lighting fixtures will create a romantic atmosphere for a patio or outdoor dining area.

    Light Temperature

Light bulbs come in a variety of color temperatures. Knowing the kind of mood or ambiance you want to create for a certain area can help you determine the temperature of your bulbs.

According to the scale of lighting temperature, a “warm” light is lower in temperature than a “cool” light. High temperature bulbs give off a white or blue light and appear cooler; low temperature lights emit a warmer and inviting yellow glow.

3 Tips for Keeping Landscape Lights Hidden

    Last updated 7 years ago

Professional outdoor lighting can paint a beautiful portrait of your home… but only if that lighting does not distract from what it is meant to illuminate. With a little creativity and strategic design planning, you can keep your fixtures well-hidden from view.

    1. Using the Landscape: An easy way to hide landscape lighting at no extra cost is to conceal the light source with the yard’s natural features. When planning where you will place fixtures, consider putting lights in or behind shrubs and trees. Shining light through the leaves in this way creates a soft, natural effect similar to moonlight. Artificial landscape features like fake rocks can house and conceal an entire lighting fixture while blending into the natural landscape.
    2. Recessed and In-Ground Lighting: You can also create space to keep a source of light hidden.  Lighting installed directly into the ground is ideal for walkways and boundaries. In-ground lights can also dramatically showcase a favorite feature, like a tree or garden. If you want to light up a porch or other common area, try installing recessed lights pointing down from an awning; this kind of soft architectural lighting can make a yard inviting.
    3. Light and Shadow: Another excellent way to keep lighting fixtures out of view is to conceal them using the light itself. Pointing landscape lights away from viewers hides the fixtures and softens and diffuses the light. Angling lights so that they do not shine on each other also helps to obscure fixtures. Pointing the light at upward angles draws attention to features at eye level, deflecting eyes from the lights themselves.

Landscape lighting can help transform your home and yard into an attractive space after the sun sets.
